The York Suburban Middle School was awarded the Shippensburg University School Study Council Exemplary program for the Friends of Rachel Club.

The Friends of Rachel (FOR) club is an extension of the York Suburban Middle School PRIDE program.  It is based off of the writings of Rachel Joy Scott, the first student killed during the Columbine High School shooting in 1999.  The club  empowers students to help create a culture of kindness and compassion to continue Rachel Scott’s theory that “if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” The club teaches students the importance of starting a chain reaction within their school, community, and world through various subgroups.

The following are the various groups that make up the Friends of Rachel Club.  Groups may change from year to year based off of the compassion and vision of the students.

High school students and coaches took part.

After warm-up exercises led by York Suburban Middle School teacher Michael Jackson, the students and the mascots from the four elementary schools in the district took part in a two-lap fun run.

Following that, students were signed up to participate in baseball/softball,  soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, tennis, cheerleading, and cross country and track and field clinics.

The evening ended with all of the students running through a tunnel created at the stadium.

YSMS Student Wins Rotary Award

Micah McKee, a seventh grade honor roll student at York Suburban Middle School, was presented with the Rotary Club of York’s prestigious “Service Above Self” Award in April.  The award is a keystone-shaped clock.

Micha McKee, a York Suburban Middle School student, was presented with the Rotary Club of York's "Service Above Self" Award. He is shown with Al Sykes, President of the Rotary Club of York, and Michele Baker, Chair of the Service Above Self Committee.

Micah McKee, a York Suburban Middle School student, was presented with the Rotary Club of York’s “Service Above Self” Award. He is shown with Al Sykes, President of the Rotary Club of York, and Michele Baker, Chair of the “Service Above Self” Committee.

The citation read at the Rotary meeting stated:

“Micah’s Mission” is a project initiated by Micah to create and donate fleece tied blankets to pediatric patients at York Hospital.  The idea for Micah’s Mission was generated by Micah’s personal experience in handling an illness.  At the age of 5 years, Micah was diagnosed with Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, a childhood hip disorder initiated by a disruption of blood flow to the ball of the femur bone.  Due to the lack of blood flow, the bone stops growing.  For Micah, the disorder resulted in a great deal of pain and surgery in 2007 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

After surgery, Micah was required to wear a special brace during his recovery period.  At that time Micah used a fleece blanket made by a friend to avoid drawing attention to his brace.  From this experience, Micah developed a special empathy for other kids who have illnesses that require hospital stays.  While Micah has returned to normal activities like baseball, he continues his efforts with Micah’s Mission, selecting material and creating blankets with his family members.  But Micah goes the extra mile – Micah not only creates blankets to give to others, he personally meets one-on-one with each patient for the delivery.  The smiles and responses he receives in return give the motivation to continue his work.

Micah’s Mission is assisted by private donations and by the efforts of Micah’s parents Kristen and Michael McKee and his sister Kennedy.

YSHS Musicians Perform in Cleveland

York Suburban High School musicians in Cleveland, Ohio.

The York Suburban High School Music Department took a musical field trip to Cleveland, Ohio,  from April 24 to 26.

The Concert Band, the Color Guard, and the Orchestra performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Concert Choir and YS Singers performed in the Great Lakes Science Center.

The students had an educational experience touring the Rock Hall and Great Lakes Science Center, as well as, attending a Cleveland Orchestra Concert at Severance Hall.  Music teacher Matthew Husler said, “Not only is this a great way for the students to perform in a different environment, but they also receive additional hands-on education as the concepts they are learning about at school come to life beyond a textbook and a classroom.”

While in Cleveland, the students also had the opportunity to stay at a Kalahari Resort and spend some time having fun and relaxing at the Indoor Water Park.
