At Indian Rock Elementary School, the presenter, Heather Morris, gave a brief physics lesson about Isaac Newton and the types of movements.  Then, students worked in pairs to create amusement park rides out of Lego bricks.

The students had to follow written and visual directions. Each ride was powered by a battery motor.  After completing the rides, students were given time to experiment with their rides and take a “museum walk” to view other rides.

The field trip was free for Mrs.  Stephanie Crumbling’s class because the class won a contest through a nomination from Mrs. Angela Pessognelli, Elisabeth Aparicio’s mother.

Teachers Never Stop Learning

Teachers during attend an in-service day.

Teachers attend a Professional Staff Development day.

Teachers in the York Suburban School District have Professional Staff Development days throughout the school year.

While students were out of school for Veterans Day, teachers were in classrooms for Professional Development Workshops.

In addition to Professional Staff Development days, teachers and staff members also take training and refresher courses in health and safety — such as CPR.  Such a session was recently held at Indian Rock Elementary School.

York Waste Management came to the school and presented a special recycling puppet show.  The speaker created puppets from recycled materials and told classic stories with the puppets.  She then explained to the children how each puppet was made.  Students learned how to look for the recycling triangle and what is recyclable and what is not.

Her last puppet show demonstrated to children what happens to the items that are placed in the recycle bin.  The process of scrubbing and cleaning was demonstrated using two student helpers.

For the fire department visit, the focus was on fire safety and students had an opportunity to climb aboard a fire truck.
