A.L.I.C.E.

Submitted by: Victoria GrossALICEinst

The primary responsibility of the York Suburban School District is to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. Safety situations come in many forms, both natural and man-made. As a district, we have to envision the uncertain and prepare and plan or it. One such uncertainly is the way in which students and staff will respond to an active shooter.

To assist our students and staff in learning how to respond to an active shooter, the District has adopted a new component to the Safety Response Plan, A.L.I.C.E.  A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) is a comprehensive program which provides students and staff with the strategies and options needed in order to respond to and survive an active shooter attack. A.L.I.C.E. teaches individuals to participate in their own survival while leading others to safety. Teachers and principals were introduced to the A.L.I.C.E. strategies during the summer of 2016 and will continue to receive additional training throughout the 2016-2017 school year. Building All Hazard Safety teams will continue to tailor the A.L.I.C.E. strategies to meet the needs of their building and students. Each building team will determine when to introduce the students to A.L.I.C.E. With A.L.I.C.E. training, our teachers will be better prepared to handle this unlikely event.

Summer Professional Development – Technology Integration

Submitted by: Dr. Patricia Maloney

It was an exciting summer filled with a variety of professional development opportunities for staff. Professional development is an essential component of the District’s commitment to providing appropriate and effective instruction in an ever changing world. The teachers at the York Suburban School District were given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in a variety of areas dealing with the integration of technology into the classroom.

One of the recent developments in educational technology is the ability to use devices to actively engage all learners. Those tools assist teachers in determining how well students are mastering new skills, and teachers can modify future instruction to better meet the needs of all learners.

The sessions were facilitated by our own talented York Suburban teachers.  As students return to school, they can expect to see thoughtful inclusion of technology as part of a wide variety of instructional strategies utilized by teachers for student success.
