Message from the Superintendent

Shelly 2

The York Suburban School District is about to open the doors of our six school buildings for another exciting school year!  We will greet approximately 3,000 students, eager to learn and engage in all aspects of the educational program.  Once again, great things will happen in the classroom, on stage, in the gym and on the field.  Welcome back students and staff!

The District is very grateful to the larger community for the ongoing support provided for all that we do.  This year, we added several teaching positions to accommodate our growing student population and to ensure that we are able to continue to meet the needs of all students in appropriately sized classes.  In a five-year period, 2010-2015, the District reduced its professional staff by 26, despite the increasing enrollment.  It was very important that we turn that tide and reestablish some of those positions so that we can continue to provide the best possible educational experience for all students.

Again, thanks to the support of our community, the District has also been able to tackle a number of maintenance projects that had been deferred for years due to financial constraints.  As a matter of priority, we first tackled those projects linked to safety concerns.  An aging middle school kitchen has been refurbished to provide a safe and healthy environment for our 750 middle school students.  We have added secure entrances to our Middle School, East York, and Indian Rock buildings.   With these renovations, each of the offices will look a bit different as well.  The Trojan athletic field received a new carpet and the auxiliary gym of the high school has been converted to a valuable teaching space.

New staff.  Refurbished facilities.  Continued excellence.  We are…..YS!

I-83 Construction May Cause Delays

The 1-83 Exit 18 construction project may cause congestion and delays for students, school busses, and parents traveling on Mt. Rose during the morning and afternoon rush hours.   Please be patient with bus schedules and allow yourself extra time to get to and from schools.  Green Hill Road, a popular route from the high school to Mt. Rose Avenue, re-opened August 16, but construction continues along Mt. Rose at the intersection and traffic will continue to be slow-moving.

New Smiles Welcome YS Visitors

welcome

Those visiting the offices throughout the district this school year might notice some new faces as well as some familiar faces in new places.

This year, LaDawn Huber will be working in the high school guidance office which she anticipates will be quite a change from her part-time position in Valley View’s office. Before making the shift, Mrs. Huber took advantage of her time off this summer to spend time with her family in Ocean City, MD; Pittsburgh; Sea Isle City, NJ; and Niagara Falls. So far she finds the size of the students to be the most notable difference.  “I’ve worked at Valley View for the past 10 years, so I am used to smaller students!” she remarked.  Mrs. Huber is proud to be the parent of two York Suburban alumni, and she is looking forward to working in the high school.

Taking Mrs. Huber’s place at Valley View is Kate Swope. Prior to eight years of taking care of her children full-time, she worked in technical writing and client support. She has two sons in the district. About the upcoming school year, Ms. Swope said, “I’m really looking forward to working with the great staff and students at Valley View this year.”

The high school main office welcomes back Kathy Pugh. Mrs. Pugh had previously been working at the middle school.  This summer, Mrs. Pugh enjoyed spending time with her eight grandchildren, golfing, fishing, and swimming.  She spent time at her cabin in Juniata County, golfed at Lost Creek Golf Club, and traveled to Little Buffalo State Park. However, she has already been at work in the high school and has noticed that the middle school is a bit busier with parent interaction than the high school over the summer months. As the school year begins, she is “looking forward to getting reacquainted with the staff and meeting new staff members.

York Suburban Middle School welcomes Diana Loomis to the main office. Previously, she worked in the cafeteria at Northeastern High School. Ms. Loomis and her daughter, a ninth grader in the district, travelled to Lake Superior this summer.  Ms. Loomis is looking forward to getting to know the middle school students and staff.

Please join York Suburban in welcoming these ladies to their new positions!

Summer Building Projects Update

Submitted by:  Corinne Mason

Summer is always a busy time in the District for custodial, maintenance and grounds staff.  This is the time of year that they get the chance to go into the buildings and clean, do some preventative maintenance and other things that cannot be done when the students are in session.  This is also the time when the District can get some of the more major repairs and renovations done that need to be done.  This year was no exception.  In fact, we had an extremely busy summer.  We had some type of project going on at four of the six school buildings.

At Indian Rock Elementary, there was a secure entrance installed which gave the offices and the entrance to the building a slightly new look.  In addition, there was new carpeting installed in the classrooms and the library.  East York Elementary also had a secure entrance installed and you will notice a difference when you enter the building as well as the offices.   Completion of the new entrances at these buildings now gives all of our buildings a secure entrance for increased safety for our students.

The Middle School had the biggest renovation of the summer.  The Middle School administration offices are now in the front of the building with a new secure entrance.  The guidance offices were relocated to the former administrative offices and two classrooms were relocated to the former guidance offices. The kitchen and dining area are being renovated to allow for adequate seating while addressing some safety concerns as well.

Last, but not least, the High School also had its share of attention.  The High School had the sidewalks redone on Southern Road and the auxiliary gym was renovated to increase the size to allow for more usage.

Once school reopens, if you have the chance, please check out all the results!

Trojan Field Receives Safety Upgrade

Trojan Field went through a major renovation this summer.  The turf was replaced, soccer/football goal post straightened, field safety net installed, and a retaining wall built.  The project upgraded the facility to become much safer for all of the students and community members using the field and tennis courts.  A pad was installed under the turf to keep the field safer for the life of the field.  The addition of a 20-foot safety net separating Trojan Field and the tennis courts was installed to protect the tennis courts.  A three-foot retaining wall was installed to assist in keeping the field safe and playable, keep soil off the field,  and preserve the turf and pad.  The project was a success from a safety and usability standpoint.  We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during the renovation.

Escaping Language Limits

Submitted by:  Dr. Kimberly Stoltz

To provide our English Language Learners (ELL)  with more access to academic vocabulary and individualized language instruction throughout the school day, Yorkshire students started using a tablet-based program called Imagine Learning.  Imagine Learning begins with a diagnostic assessment to see where the students need extra language support. The students begin lessons and activities tailored to their needs. The program adjusts the content based on the student’s performance.

What is unique about this program for our ELL population is that it introduces new concepts in the student’s’ primary language first, eliminating the language barrier to comprehending the concepts.  Currently, there are seven different languages represented with the Yorkshire ELL students.

Funding through the York Suburban Education Foundation has provided tablets for students use beyond the school day.  The “Escaping Language Limits” grant has allowed students to continue using Imagine Learning beyond the school day and throughout the summer so our students can continue to be immersed in the English language while at home, ultimately preparing them for the upcoming school year.
