Two Hour Delays for Professional Development

Submitted by Dr. Patricia Maloney

There are two school days on the calendar,  September 26 and February 6,  where teachers are afforded the opportunity to collaborate about assessments and student progress.  Teachers use the time to review assessment results and create grade level, classroom and individual plans to meet student needs.  The time is also used for staff professional development related to instructional best practices.

The administration realizes that this can be inconvenient for some families. We are very appreciative of your cooperation as professional development time for our staff is an extremely valuable component to student success.

Sergeant Wilbur Brings a Welcome Smile to Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

Yorkshire is very fortunate to have the support of our local police department. Sergeant Brian Wilbur is very often a visible presence in our hallway as our students enter for the day. The Springettsbury Township Police officers reach out to the various schools in the area to build relationships with students. While Sergeant Wilbur is not technically assigned to our building, he comes because he loves the interaction with the students. A married father of a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old who attend Red Lion Area School District, Sergeant Wilbur says his favorite thing about coming to Yorkshire over the past two years is, “seeing the kids, giving high-fives, and receiving hugs. It’s my absolute favorite part of the day.”

Community Night to Discuss The Last Lecture

Submitted by Kelly Paraskevakos

Did you read The Last Lecture?    If not, there’s still time to read this wonderful book and participate in our first Community Night!  Join us on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, to watch a short section of Randy Pausch’s actual lecture and then engage in a discussion and activity as we celebrate our first One School, One Book selection! All are welcome and we encourage students, staff, parents, and community members to participate.

The Last Lecture is about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment. It is a summation of everything Randy Pausch believes. The Last Lecture asks readers to consider several important questions: What wisdom would you impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance? If you had to vanish tomorrow, what would you want to be your legacy?

Want to read the book before November 9th? York Suburban staff and students can visit the LMC (Library Media Center) to sign out a copy and community members can find the book free online by clicking on the One School, One Book link on the YSHS webpage.  We hope you will join us for this community event.

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” -Randy Pausch

Countdown to BOB!

2016-17 is a Battle of the Buildings year.  This year will be the 7th Battle of the Buildings event since it was first organized by Kathy Cardello and Eric Hoffman in 2006 under Dr. Hartman’s leadership. This fun event pits competitors against one another in impossibly silly games that are probably equally fun to watch as they are to play. Proceeds from ticket and concession sales support the York Suburban Dollars for Scholars chapter, which provides scholarships to York Suburban students in support of their continued education.

Initially an annual event, BOB is now held every other year.  Initial competitors were the Juniors and Seniors; the administration; and faculty and staff from each of the district buildings (the High School, Valley View Elementary, Indian Rock Elementary, East York Elementary, and the Middle School). With the opening of Yorkshire Elementary, the teams are now: Juniors; Seniors; the High school; the Middle School; the Primary Powerhouse combined team of Valley View and Yorkshire; and the Intermediate Ironmen of East York and Indian Rock. The winner takes home the carved BOB trophy and bragging rights for the next two years.  Who will win in 2017?  We’ll find out on February 4, 2017. Past winners have included:

Indian Rock (2006)

Middle School (2007)

Indian Rock (2009)

Middle School (2011)

2013 Seniors and 2014 Juniors  – Tied (2013)

Middle School (2015)

Alumni Information Needed

Submitted by Dr. Brian Ellis

hsalumni

Last year, York Suburban High School created a bulletin board to showcase alumni achievements.   Not only did they want to recognize the accomplishments of our alumni, they also wanted to share the information with students to inspire or provide them with new ideas for careers they may wish to pursue.  In addition to the “alumni board”, many staff members welcome distinguished alumni into their classrooms to share their experiences and to help extend the student education into “the real world.”

The YSHS staff would love to hear about all the great things our alumni are doing.  If you have a personal experience, or you know of another alumnus about whom the high school should know, please reach out to Dr. Brian Ellis, Principal (bellis@yssd.org).

A few examples from the alumni board:   Mariel Marlow, Class of ’03, is part of the Center for Disease Control’s 2015 class of Epidemic Intelligence Services where she’s helping to plan for and control the spread of disease in our country and the world. Jacob Castaldi, Class of 2012,  is the Chief Creative Officer for online retailer Ivory Ella.  His company has contributed $679,000 to Save the Elephants.  Adam Stotsky, Class of ’86,  is now the president of the E! Network, a cable network that is part of NBCUniversal.  Make sure to stop by the front lobby “alumni board” near the main office to see what our alumni are doing now!

Many great activities are happening at YSHS, some involving students from other buildings and grade levels.  Here are some of the big events coming up in the next month:

  • The National Honor Society and various YSHS clubs, organizations, and sports teams will be hosting the great annual tradition: YS Trick or Treat Night, at 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 27.   The NHS welcomes our kindergarten, first, and second grade students from Valley View and Yorkshire to “Trick or Treat” at our high school.  Various clubs and organizations decorate high school doorways and often dress up themselves with themes ranging from the Disney Princesses to Superheroes to Haunted Houses.  It’s a great way for our primary students to enjoy a safe Trick or Treat experience.  Primary parents, be sure to mark your calendars!
  • The YSHS music program will host its first concert of the year on October 20 at 7:00 PM in the YSHS auditorium.  The Concert Band, Orchestra, and Choir will each perform a number of selections for the audience’s enjoyment.  This fall marks the first time that the Concert Band has participated in the fall concert.   It was one of the great changes that came with the shift in our band program that start this fall.  Concert Band is now a year-round activity allowing students to perform four concerts with Orchestra and Choir this year.
  • 22 YSHS artists have been selected to display their work in the first annual YCASE (York Community Art Scholars Exhibition).  Click for more information.
  • The YSHS Trojan Theatre is making final preparations to raise the curtain on their first performance of the year on November 3, 4, and 5 at 7:30 PM in the High School auditorium.  The performance, led by student director, Meredith Singleton, and featuring student-actors: Steven Burchett, Marisa Kouma, Emerson White, John Casper, Selina Flanscha, Vienna Zerbe, Nick Jacques, Bevan Fogdall, Asher Ruppert, Livia Demopoulos, and Abigail Hardman, will be of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery And Then There Were None!
  • The York Suburban High School Marching Band is set to perform in its first Showcase on Saturday, October 15 at the Ephrata Showcase of Bands starting at 6:00PM.  They will also perform on Saturday, October 29 in Dover. Unfortunately, their first showcase performance at Red Lion’s Sound Spectacular on October 1 was rained out.
  • The Tri-M Music Honor Society will induct its new class of student-musicians on Thursday, November 10 at 7:00 PM in the YSHS auditorium.  Each of the inductees will also participate in a recital immediately following the induction.
  • The National Honor Society and National English Honor Society will induct its newest classes of members on Thursday, November 17 at 7:00 PM in the High School auditorium.
