YS Schools Leading the State

The York Suburban Middle School is the top-ranked middle school in the state of Pennsylvania!

The entire community shares in the pride of this distinction.  This Shelly 2Number One ranking comes from the score of 98.1 earned by our middle school on the School Performance Profile (SPP), recently published by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The SPP score takes into account student performance on standardized tests, attendance, and promotion rates.  It is quite an honor to earn this distinction.  Congratulations students, teachers, staff and community!

The York Suburban community takes great pride in the academic accolades earned by the District.  Within the past year, York Suburban has been recognized as follows:

  • #1 Ranked Middle School in PA – as per 2014 SPP scores
  • 12th ranked high school in PA for 2014 SPP scores
  • 67th Best High School in the United States (5th best in PA), Newsweek magazine
  • 83rd Beating the Odds: America’s Best High Schools for Low-Income Students, Newsweek magazine
  • Keystone Awards – four of our six schools earned this award for 2013 and 2014 SPP scores
  • 10th ranked high school in Pennsylvania for 2013 SPP scores

So what does all of this mean to the students?  There is no doubt that our students take great pride in the academic strength of the district.  They clearly understand that their daily efforts in the classroom are rewarded with a diploma that is valued and respected.  With every transcript that is sent to a college or university, information is added, calling attention to the strength of the academic program at York Suburban.

In every classroom K-12, there is a unique culture that places tremendous value on the learning process.  Our students and their families support this culture in so many ways.

From a broader perspective, one has to recognize York Suburban for much more than academic awards cited above.  We boast a high percentage of students going on to higher education.  We boast a very high percentage of student involvement in extracurricular activities with over 20 different athletic programs, music and drama programs, and a host of other clubs and organizations that capture a wide range of interests and talents.  Our students consistently win awards at the county, district, regional, and state level.

We have been particularly pleased this year to welcome back 21 students who were previously enrolled in charter schools.  Most were seeking the strong academic foundation available to students at York Suburban, as well as the wide-ranging extracurricular opportunities.

The best news is that these students and their families have reported that they are pleased with the decision to return.  We expect that our continued success, in the classroom and beyond, will be attractive to other charter students as well as to those moving into the community.

We are indeed, YS PROUD!
