Athletes feel inequity

York Suburban High School prides itself on having a wide variety of sports.

Some students at York Suburban do not consider certain activities to be sports like cheerleading, field hockey, or softball just to name a few. Whether it be physical disrespect  or verbal disrespect, students make it known how they feel. People mock, make fun of, and pick at these sports by saying things like “those aren’t real sports” or “that’s easy, anybody could do that.”

Senior Zoe Molock, a varsity cheerleader for the York Suburban football team since freshman year said, “football is held to a higher degree than any other sport in my opinion, people actually come to football games and support way more than they would come to soccer.”

Molock also pointed out that “more people go to support female sports than the male sports, like soccer; if you look at the male soccer games there are way more people then the people who go to support the girls.”
Not everybody feels this way. Senior Amaal Abdelaziz, a field hockey player, said, “No I don’t really believe that there is bias in York Suburban sports, but I feel that people are mean sometimes to certain sports.”

Some sports players feel that they are disrespected and others say that they are not, it all depends on the person. Everybody is allowed to have their opinion, but if it is at the cost of other sports player’s feelings and self esteem, it has to stop.
