Suburban’s Athletic Scholars

by Kiyanna Dowling

The York Suburban class of 2020 has a lot of musically, artistically, and academically gifted seniors. Within this class is a group of athletically gifted seniors including Garth Barclay, Dominic Corto, and Rachel Ludwick.

These are just a select few seniors who have verbally and officially committed to colleges to continue their academic and athletic careers. Ludwick has committed to Monmouth University in New Jersey to play Division I soccer, Barclay has committed to Syracuse University in New York to play Division I football, and Corto has committed to the University of Tampa to play Division II lacrosse.

Corto decided to continue his career at Tampa where he will major in business and finance. Corto made his ultimate decision to commit there because it was everything he was looking for including “A chance to win a national championship, a really good business program, and with warm weather and plenty of fun.” As a freshman at Tampa, Corto hopes to try and get some varsity time. As for his upcoming senior season, Corto wants to, “win the county championship along with making a run in districts and states.”

On the other hand, Barclay is still deciding whether to major in biomedical engineering, law or entertainment. With all the offers Barclay received, he ended up choosing Syracuse because of, “the family feel that is at Syracuse and the good academics there.” As a freshman Barclay hopes to get bigger from working a lot in the weight room. Barclay’s senior season of football has been going pretty well so far to say the least, in which he says, “I think our season can speak for itself right now. We’re doing really well compared to past years and there’s still room for improvement.”

Ludwick chose to continue her career at Monmouth where she will major in biology. For her, “Monmouth offered me the best opportunity to pursue my academic interests and play soccer at the Division I level, which has always been a goal of mine.” By training hard over the summer Ludwick hopes to, “make an impact on the team. Also, as a forward, I hope to score some goals.” Ludwick’s senior season of soccer is going very well and feels more at ease knowing that she is committed. She looks forward to improving so that she can play her best next fall.

Ludwick, Barclay, and Corto are just some of Suburban’s athletes who are going on to play at the collegiate level for their perspective sports. With this only being the beginning of the year, Suburban looks forward to more student-athletes continuing their athletic and academic careers.
