Free Agency For York Suburban Basketball

by Kiyanna Dowling

Last year, the York Suburban boys’ varsity basketball team had a record of 10-12. The boys had a tough schedule playing against teams like Delone Catholic, West York, and Eastern.

There were some nail-biter losses along with the gritty wins that come with any sports team. With the loss of three seniors, Luke Babinchak, Alex Furhman, and Cedric Walker, the team has a lot of work to do during the offseason. This consists of the rebuilding of the team and its chemistry with some new incoming freshmen and transfers.

Incoming freshman point guard, Savon Sutton and upcoming junior, Isaiah Pineda, who is a small or power forward, hope to join York Suburban’s team and make a positive impact. Returning players include juniors Alon Gorham, Aidan Hughley, and Nate Banks along with seniors Anthony Brown, Devontae Banks, Chris Spellman, RJ Marquis and Andrew Schultz.

Pineda’s favorite part about basketball is “the comradery of a group of guys coming together to meet a certain goal and having a relationship with them.” Sutton’s favorite part is “the competing aspect in going against another player, the big crowds, and being able to win with my teammates.”

Both Pineda and Sutton are looking forward to the upcoming season. Sutton is excited since he is coming into a new school and system. Pineda believes they have a lot of good pieces on the team so they can go deep into the playoffs.

As a junior, Pineda believes he could bring a “sense of leadership, a hustle player, some shooting, and different aspects to win the game.”  Sutton believes he can bring “solid ball-handling coming from a point guard position.”

Pineda’s goal for the season is to win. Sutton’s goals are a little different. He hopes to earn a varsity spot and get a starting position. For team goals, Pineda hopes to build team chemistry, while Sutton hopes to go to the playoffs.

Pineda and Sutton coming into the mix and providing something new with returning players could be what the boys’ team needs. This team has a lot of talent that hopes to be one of the best teams in the county.
