The Domination of YS Track

by Ben Rohrbaugh

Success is an expectation at York Suburban. Being successful in the classroom, being successful on the sports field. Each sport team has some degree of success. In specific, the school track team has success, lots of success.

The boys’ track team had a record of 6-1 this year, and the girls’ team went 4-2-1. The constant success of the team inspired this article.

The runners interviewed had a lot  to say about this year’s team. The names of these runners are seniors Andrew Paskey and Illanzo Feliciano, junior Katie Wand, and freshmen Noah Stern and Lilian Murray.

Paskey, Feliciano, and Wand had many good things to say about this year’s’ team. “This team was one of the best teams that I have been on honestly,” Feliciano said. “I am going to miss this when I graduate”.

Paskey felt the same way as Feliciano. “This year’s team has been the best to me honestly. I love my guys and girls more than most years.” His favorite memory was joking around with Coach VanHouwe and his teammates at practice.

Wand felt that the track team became more united as the year progressed. “We grew really close and got to spend a lot of time together. My favorite memory was messing around with my teammates at practice.”

These talented runners careers are not over yet; seniors, Paskey and Feliciano would like to run in college after high school. “I am running next year at Upper Iowa University on a track scholarship” said Paskey. As for Feliciano, he plans on running at York College or Thaddeus Stevens in the future.

These upperclassmen had a huge impact on the first year runners on the track team. Freshman Murray said that both Paskey and Feliciano helped her this year. “Andrew Paskey helped me a lot, especially mentally. Illanzo helped me individually with high and long jump which really helped me a lot.”

With the help of these upperclassmen, Murray plans on running for the next couple of years, trying to continue the success of the program.

First year runner, freshman Noah Stern, said he has already gained lots of advice on how to better himself in sports competition. “I learned to work hard, to not give up, and stretch after your workout” Stern said. As for next year, Stern plans on running again, as well as trying cross country in the fall.

Behind any successful team lies a successful coach. For the YS track team, this coach is Mr. Dan VanHouwe. VanHouwe has been coaching the team for a long time and used to help out with cross country. His runners really connect with him.

With VanHouwe at the helm, the track team has been winning for a long time. Hopefully, this trend of success keeps up throughout all parts of the York Suburban school district.
