MTV eliminates gender categories for awards

by Drue Allison

The long-time television and movie awards for MTV is fast approaching and set to air on May 7th. The event will be hosted by Adam Devine, who is known for his various roles in movies such as Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2 along with the TV show Workaholics.

This year, the show has taken on some new rules regarding the awards given out. There will no longer be a separate category for men and women. There also will now be a section dedicated to television and another for film, both competing for the same awards. These two entertainment units, however, will not be competing with each other. According to an article by Billboard, “Five new categories make this year’s telecast, as MTV hopes to highlight cultural relevancy in today’s society. Aside from the explanatory categories Best Host, Best Reality Competition, and Tearjerker, there will also be awards for Best American Story (awarded to the show or film that shows America at its best, open and diverse) and Best Fight Against the System (formerly known as Best Fight — awarded to the film or show whose characters best exemplify fighting against a system that tries to keep them down)”.

Some of the films and television shows nominated are: Get Out, Beauty and the Beast, Stranger Things, Logan, Hidden Figures, and This Is Us. Vote now for your favorites with the link below. The show is set to air on May 7 at 5:00 P.M.
