Work Out or Shut Down?

Should students in sports also be taking a physical education class? Submitted by:http://www.amphi.com/media/CMSImport/54983569208E4874824392F4C7A30E63.gif

Currently at York Suburban High School, students who play sports still have to attend formal physical education regardless of the amount and intensity of their sports workouts, and practices. The question is, is it fair? I believe so.

The response seems to vary from student to student, and scenario to scenario. However, the rights of students should not vary from person to person due to the amount of work, or lack thereof.

There have been a lot of conversations overheard from the student body about the matters of Phys Ed and sports. Some have said they think students who play sports ultimately should not have formal Phys Ed.

However, the majority seem to agree that students who play sports should, in fact, attend Phys Ed because what is done in Phys Ed most likely varies from what is done in sports practices and work-out activities.

Senior Brady Pappas said, “I think everyone should have to do Phys Ed. If students who played sports didn’t have gym it would be like saying ‘Hey good for you for being athletic…’ and a punch in the face to everyone else.”

He also said, “Some sports are more active than others and some students are more active on their teams than others. All in all, everyone should have to take Phys Ed.”

Gym classes are designed to hit certain target zones, such as cardio, endurance, strength, etc. If students who played sports did not take Phys Ed they may not be meeting certain physical education criterias for students

Sophomore Amy Sprich said, “The gym curriculum covers things not covered in sports activities, so yes, all students should have formal Phys Ed. However, Physical Ed teachers should go a bit easier on the students who play sports and often have practice.”

Physical Education Coach Vanhouwe states “The State of Pennsylvania requires all students to take and pass four(4) years of physical education”

Ultimately, all students should have to attend a formal Phys Ed class to meet the proper curriculum and to keep themselves healthy, regardless of whether they belong to a sports team or not.

However, maybe the next question is, should teachers in fact go a bit easier on students in sports? Or perhaps that should empower and allow them to strive further in their formal Phys Ed classes.

It seems that regardless of extracurricular activities, the majority of students agree that Phys Ed class should be, and stay a class that is for everyone.
