PeoplesBank Supports YSEF

Submitted by Jamie Vranich, YSEF Board Member

The York Suburban Education Foundation is honored to be among the 70 organizations throughout South Central Pennsylvania that PeoplesBank supported through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program this year. Since 2010, PeoplesBank has remained committed to partnering with YSEF to do more for York Suburban students. In February, Diane Baker, Chief Operating and Risk Officer and Executive Vice President of PeoplesBank, presented Sarah Reinecker, President of the York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF), with a $10,0000 check that will support the district-wide Learning Commons strategic initiative to incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) concepts into the York Suburban curriculum at all learning levels.

Dollars for Scholars Establishes a New Fund

Submitted by Stephanie Sullivan,  DFS Treasurer

York Suburban Dollars for Scholars Chapter is pleased to announce that we have established the Battle of the Buildings (BOB) Scholarship Fund.  This fully-endowed scholarship is held with our other funds at the York County Community Foundation. We created this fund as a way of giving back to the York Suburban community that has supported BOB over the years. The first BOB scholarship will be awarded in May 2019 and then annually thereafter.  This fund will stand in perpetuity as a constant acknowledgment of the support and generosity of the YS community. Thank You!

About our scholarships:  Dollars for Scholars applications are done entirely online through Scholarship America’s premiere, secure website – furthering the transparency of scholarship review. Applications are scored along very objective criteria.  While 50% of the total applicant score reflects financial need (the FAFSA), the other 50% comes from scholastic merit (SATs, school performance) and Merit (which includes activities, work experience, educational and career objectives, and any unusual circumstances).

What is Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM)?

Submitted by Mrs. Ashley Markey

March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation.

MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973 and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month-long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools are where all children should have access to music.  MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

The celebration continues to grow each year, reaching more and more students, teachers, musicians, and music supporters. Schools and communities throughout the country and overseas celebrate MIOSM with concerts and other activities based on the year’s theme. Classrooms, concert halls, civic buildings, clubs, parks, libraries, and shopping malls are just some of the arenas in which the public can observe the processes and results of music education.

History in Wax

Submitted by Mrs. Kathy Pavoncello

Second graders at Yorkshire Elementary are learning about notable celebrity and historical figures. Some classes hosted “wax museums,” to teach fellow students and family members about famous individuals of their choice. School librarian Ms. Michelle Dean and classroom teacher Ms. Kelly Duke guided students through the research process using both print and online sources to enhance the understanding of the notable person chosen. Using research and typing skills, students were required to create a brief autobiography. An oral dictation, physical attire, and a Google Slides presentation were all part of each presentation, as well. Collectively, these students did a wonderful job creating a virtual wax museum and learned about life through the famous eyes of someone they admire.

Virtual Tour de France

Submitted by  Ms. Joelle Stark

On Friday, March 8, and Monday, March 12, the eighth graders from the French I class took a 3D virtual tour of Paris with the help of the middle school Media Specialist Mrs. Rosemarie Nestler. Students are researching the monuments in Paris as a class project. The virtual reality headset and Google Earth gave them a chance to walk the streets of Paris and see their monuments up close and personal. The students had a lot of fun and commented: “I can’t believe how big the Louvre is!”, and “There is my monument!”. It was a wonderful learning experience and it increased interest in the project.

YSEF’s Richard Guyer Fund Continues to Celebrate the Legacy

Submitted by Jamie Vranich, YSEF

The Richard Guyer Fund, started by the York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF) in March of 2009, celebrates the incredible contribution Coach Guyer made to the York Suburban School District as Head Swim Coach for 41 years as well as in honor of the assistant coaches who have stood by his side and supported the team.

Coach Guyer continues to be involved in the high school swim program as an Assistant Coach along with Head Coach Craig Brennan and Assistant Coaches Hope Kowalewski and Ever Gonzalez.  In addition to the years at YSSD, Guyer started the Trojan Aquatic Club (TAC) program in 1988/89 as a way to develop future high school swimmers. He continues to share is swim knowledge at TAC swim meets.  Patty Neidigh, head coach for TAC since 1997, swam for Coach Guyer during her high school years and continues the tradition started by Guyer.

As highlighted in the YSEF 2011 Annual Report, Coach Guyer and the assistant coaches “have established a swimming legacy while more importantly, consistently supporting academic excellence.  The “I Think I Can” motto of the swim team, based on the book, The Little Engine That Could, is part of the legacy established by Richard Guyer.”

The Richard Guyer Fund is currently over $15,000 with a goal of $25,000; at which time it will be moved to the York County Community Foundation.  Monies from this fund, once at the YCCF, will be directed toward fulfilling the above motto; promoting team building and enhancing the psychological mindset of York Suburban students to achieve excellence in all that they do.

To contribute to the Richard Guyer Fund, in honor of a York Suburban High School swimmer or a TAC swimmer, please visit the YSEF website at www.ysef.org.  An acknowledgment will be sent to Coach Guyer.

YSEF was formed in 2008 and focuses on improving the district through effective partnerships in the business, civic and education sectors to ensure the success of its students. The mission of the YSEF is to benefit its students and thereby strengthen YSSD through a permanent endowment to enhance the educational experiences and foster continued academic excellence.

Read Across America Week at Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Mrs. Kathy Pavoncello

Yorkshire Elementary students spent the final days of February celebrating Read Across America Week. Each day presented a new opportunity to dress in a way relating to a Dr. Seuss book theme. One day was dedicated to The Sneetches, allowing students and staff to dress in bright neon colors, and use their creativity to express individual uniqueness.  Another day was dedicated to random acts of kindness, modeling Horton in Horton Hears a Who and Horton Lays an Egg. Of course, Wacky Wednesday was great fun with all of the mismatched outfits and crazy hair! Animals were on parade, via shirts, socks, and even costumes to celebrate the book, If I Ran the Zoo. Finally, the week culminated in the big celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Red and white stripes were everywhere that day, as a nod to The Cat in the Cat.  Yorkie Bear and Queen Bee paid a visit to share the concept of “Drop Everything And Read” and sing “Dr. Seuss. We Love You”! What a fun Seussical Week, indeed!

YSEF Donations Honor Alumnus-Retiree on Birthday

Submitted by Jamie Vranich, YSEF Board Member

David Coombs, better known as “Buddha”, asked his Facebook friends to consider making a donation to the York Suburban Education Foundation in celebration of his most recent birthday in February. Buddha’s friends and family exceeded his goal of $200 and raised $270 which will go directly to programs that enhance the educational experience for YS students. After having graduated from YSHS in 1982 and retiring last year after dedicating 35 years to the district, Buddha continues to support YS in so many ways. Thank you to David “Buddha” Coombs for inviting your friends and family to support YSEF in celebration of your birthday!
