Road Runners are Rising Stars in Robotics

Submitted by Mrs. Jennifer Foremsky

On Saturday, February 3, the Indian Rock First LEGO League teams attended the First LEGO League regional tournament at Pennsylvania State University, Berks County. Each team programmed the LEGO EV3 Mindstorms robot to perform missions, presented a “Robot Design Executive Summary”, and  completed a “Core Values” activity to demonstrate teamwork skills. All teams also did a science project related to this year’s HydroDynamics theme. The “We Rock the Bots” team (coached by Mitzi Heaton & Jason Siewert) designed a Hydroponics bus that helps African communities conserve water. The “Robotic Roadrunners” (coached by Jen Foremsky & Sussy Tjandra) designed a solar-powered algae harvester to reduce harmful algae blooms in the Chesapeake Bay. The Robotic Roadrunners received the “Rising Star” award for team work ethic and entrepreneurial project design.

This is the first year that York Suburban School District has participated in the First LEGO League program. The program is designed for students in grades four through eight. Elementary and middle school-aged students research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO-based robots of their own design.

Students Build into the Future

Submitted by Mrs. Karen Campbell

Students from L to R; Kirollos Mina, Noah West, Ben Kenien, Matthew Aulthouse, Nick Andricos, Henry Ducker, Amanda Sargen, Gelisse Seidel.

On Saturday, January 27, 2018, eighth graders in Mrs. Karen Campbell’s class competed at the regional Future City Competition held at the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg. This year’s challenge was to identify an age-related problem that exists in today’s urban environment and engineer two innovative solutions that allow the future city’s senior citizens to be as active, independent, and engaged as possible.

Students were responsible for five deliverables: Project Plan, Virtual City (using SimCity software), City Essay, City Model, and Presentation. Twenty-four schools from south central Pennsylvania competed. York Suburban earned the special award “Best City Layout” given by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

A special thank you to Mr. Gregory Andricos for serving as our team mentor.

Backpack Program Expands at Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Mrs. Kathy Pavoncello

In the fall, volunteers from St. John’s Lutheran Church met with Yorkshire Elementary principal, Dr. Kimberly Stoltz, to inquire about how to provide assistance to the students at Yorkshire.  The partnership started with backpacks of school supplies for some of our students, helping them get a great start on the school year.  The team effort expanded this February with the Weekend Food Backpack Program.  St. John’s, along with the Pennsylvania Food Bank, provides weekend meals to students. Yorkshire is grateful for the wonderful community support.

KINDNESS MATTERS!

Submitted by Mrs. Jackie James

Valley View Elementary (VVE) is promoting KINDNESS MONTH in February! Dr. Monos and Mrs. James teamed with Ready Teddy to lead a Kindness Parade during a school-wide celebration assembly on January 31. The assembly presentation included a lesson on kindness with fun video clips for all K-2 students to enjoy while learning about treating others with kindness! VVE students are currently receiving written compliments on paper hearts for performing random acts of kindness at school and at home. These kindness hearts are proudly displayed on our Kindness Wall in the front lobby! In addition, Valley View families will be donating items (snacks, school supplies, and clothing) for the VVE Impact Closet, which supports our own students and families in need. Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated!

Building a Community at East York Elementary

Submitted by Mrs. Karen Potts

On February 15, East York Elementary students earned a school-wide reward. Each student worked with another student from a different grade level, providing an opportunity for community building among East York students.  While partnered, students participated in service activities to connect East Yorkers with individuals in our local community.  Students created  “compliment presents” that included positive sentiments, sayings, and words to brighten the day of residents or patients of local nursing homes and retirement communities.  Students also created “nursing home hugs” which are door hangers decorated with pictures and words of kindness.  Each door hanger is a drawing and a card, all in one!  Recipients will include residents of Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Manor Care Health on Kingston Road, the Brunswick at Longstown, and Eastminster Presbyterian Church – all located in our Haines Acres neighborhood!  The students enthusiastically participated in this activity,  excited to brighten someone’s day!  We were all reminded that sometimes the little things in life matter most to people.  Each day we need to look for those little things that make our hearts happy!

East York Elementary Welcomes a President

Submitted by Mrs. Karen Potts

President Abraham Lincoln recently visited third and fourth graders at East York Elementary.  The students enjoyed learning about the sixteenth president. Listening intently to stories about the president’s life, they had many questions for Abe!

YSEF Thanks Community Supporters

York Suburban students have enjoyed assemblies with Jonathan Sprout in our elementary schools for many years!

This fall, during a visit to Valley View Elementary, Jonathan learned of the Food For Thought backpack food program and wanted to help! Through the end of February, he offered to donate the proceeds from any Jonathan Sprout CD’s sold at VVE!
