Kindergarten Registration Support

York Suburban School District uses an online, electronic registration process (click to view) which requires a computer, internet, and the ability to scan documents. In order to provide support and service to our new registrants, we are offering the times listed above to support this process. These are NOT mandatory to attend. If you need technical support, please plan on attending one of these offerings. If you are able to register independent of support, you would not be expected to attend. We will have the necessary technology and support set-up in the office area of both buildings.  You do not need to register in the building your child will attend. Your child does not need to attend this registration session.

East York Elementary is in the Greenhouse Business

In January, Mrs. Dorene Ridgway started a Greenhouse Club at East York Elementary.  This was made possible by a grant received from the York Suburban Education Foundation.  Many thanks to Mr. Wayne Ingerto and his staff for setting up the greenhouses. The Greenhouse Business Club students are working hard and were eager to get their plants in the greenhouse. Despite the unpredictable weather, the plants are growing like crazy! Come check the progress at East York’s May Festival on Friday, May 4. All plants will be for sale, along with other Greenhouse Club projects.

A New Superintendent. What’s Next?

As the York Suburban School Board of Directors announced on Monday, April 23, their efforts during the past five-month search to find the next superintendent of schools for the York Suburban School District (YSSD) ended successfully with the unanimous approval of Dr. Timothy Williams to that position. If you followed along with the monthly updates, you know the intense interview process the board used to screen and interview the applicants for this top leadership position. The board received 30 applicants from around the country and up and down the East Coast for the position, conducted three rounds of interviews, and completed a thorough vetting of its top candidate, including a rigorous and extensive background and reference check.

Dr. Williams is an experienced educator and school leader with over 30 years in public school education and is currently serving as superintendent in the Westmont Hilltop School District in Johnstown, PA. Dr. Williams began his career as a middle school English and social studies teacher, serving during his time as a team leader and two years as union president.  After serving ten years in the classroom, Dr. Williams served as a K-12 technology coordinator at Penn Manor School District. Dr. Williams subsequently moved into Manheim Township School District where he served over 15 years in a number of roles including director of information technology, director of instruction, assistant to the superintendent for curriculum, instruction and technology and assistant to the superintendent. Dr. Williams will be bringing his many professional talents,  skills, and experiences to his new role here at York Suburban.

Dr. Williams is set to begin his new duties at York Suburban on July 1, 2018, but first, he will need to meet his responsibilities and contractual obligations to the Westmont Hilltop School District for the remainder of the current school year (June 30).  Until June 30, I will continue to honor my commitment to the York Suburban School District to oversee the day-to-day responsibilities as the Acting Superintendent. The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires an unbroken transition of legal authority for public schools, and I am prepared to hand-off that authority as prescribed by PA School Code.

During the next eight weeks as the district continues to fully make the transition from my temporary and substitute status to the permanent leadership under Dr. Williams, rest assured that Dr. Williams and the school board are diligently working on start-up and strategic plans for the year ahead.  Dr. Williams has already begun the development of his entry plan, outlining the priorities he will establish, in concert with the board and administrative team. Dr. Williams is reviewing the detailed feedback reports prepared by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) during their 16 focus group sessions.  The community members, parents, staff, students, and administrators who participated in those sessions provided a listing of key issues and obstacles that face the York Suburban School District and provide a framework for setting goals and priorities for YSSD in the years ahead. You can also look forward to Dr. Williams gathering his own data by connecting with our stakeholders once he arrives on-site.  The school board also used this focus group feedback to uncover the qualities and skills needed by our next superintendent. Both the board and Dr. Williams are starting this new York Suburban era with a clear vision of expectations from our community because so many individuals shared their hopes and expectations during the CCIU-lead search process.

As the school year comes to a close and our students and staff direct their attention to their summer list of things to do, preparations for the 2018-2019 school year will shift into high gear. I’ve always found it amazing how much is accomplished by administrators, summer school staff, custodians, and buildings and grounds workers during the summer break.  I have full confidence that the efforts of all staff members this summer will yield another seamless summer that leads to another fantastic school year that starts on August 23 for our students. The board and Dr. Williams will be working meticulously so a solid foundation is in place when students and staff return for the 2018-2019 school year.  Dr. Williams is eager to bring his dynamic and innovative leadership skills to this high-performing district and work collaboratively with the York Suburban community to educate, challenge, and prepare students to shape the future.

Students Step Up to Make an Impact

The York Suburban Education Foundation’s student-led Impact Foundation’s outreach has been rapidly expanding since its start in 2015.  A growing number of elementary students are becoming “backpack buddies” in the Food for Thought program, and students from all schools are taking home supplies from the Impact Closets. However, the increasing number of students receiving assistance means there is a need for more students willing to take a role in the organization. Students from outside the Impact Foundation board are stepping up to join in the efforts to ensure that all York Suburban students have what they need to come to school prepared for the day.

For their senior project, Sophia Mingora, Kenzie Park-Hubb, and Brooke Ruth chose to focus on reaching the needs of students in the high school. They see the topic as being close to home; the people they are helping are people they see every day in the halls. By interviewing Impact Foundation president, Ali Reinecker, they found out more about the current needs of students and how they could make a difference. They are currently working on a supply collection, and at the end of May, they will give a presentation on what they learned about student needs and how others can get involved.   

Another pair of seniors, Cody O’Donnell and Michael Barbera, have chosen to focus their senior project on collecting food for the Impact Closets and Food for Thought. They feel that the Impact Foundation has really made a difference in the York Suburban community, and they want to get involved to enhance the positive impact they have already seen.

Even younger students are getting involved in any way they can. Elena Scarpato, a second-grader at Valley View, has asked her friends to donate items like food and school supplies to Food for Thought and the Impact Closets instead of receiving presents for her birthday party at the end of April. The small sacrifices students are making can’t compare to the amazing impact IF has on York Suburban students. Students helping students is more than just a motto for the Impact Foundation; it is the real result of students getting involved in their own school community to help support their classmates and friends.

PMEA District 7 Performers

Junior Zoe Prats, Cellist, Makes PMEA Central Region Orchestra

 

York Suburban junior cello player, Zoe Prats, advanced to perform with the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Central Region Orchestra at Messiah College the weekend of March 22 and 23. After auditioning and performing in the PMEA District 7 Orchestra Festival, she advanced to the Region Orchestra Festival. Although the large snow storm from earlier in the week canceled one day of rehearsal from the festival, the students still performed an outstanding and professional-level repertoire with excellence, including parts of Holst’s The Planets, and also Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.      

 

 

 East York and Indian Rock Elementary Singers

Eight students from East York and Indian Rock Elementary Schools represented our district in the District 7 PMEA Elementary Songfest.  The songfest was held on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Middletown Area High School. The students prepared for about two months before the concert to combine with 200 other elementary students to perform a spectacular event.  The East York students involved were: Iaire Miller-Brown, Amelia Emswiler, Cayli Huynh, and Brayden Nolan. The Indian Rock students involved were: Cami Green, Grace Bramble, Landon Mendoza, and Katie Burt.

BOB 2019 Volunteers Needed

Plans are underway to organize the 8th Battle of the Buildings event.  Past organizers Jamie Evans and Eric Hoffman are looking forward to participating as competitors this next time around. YS Dollars for Scholars is very excited for Eric and Jamie to return in their new role and so thankful for their years of leadership for this event. They will be missed. Since the 2019 BOB aligns with the 20th anniversary of YS Dollars for Scholars, we are calling on the Suburban community to help us put together an amazing and fun event. Volunteers are needed for: Building representatives, games, officials, announcers, tickets, concessions, raffles, and set-up/clean up.  If you or anyone you know is interested in helping in any way please contact Pam Rice at 717-880-4113, email parrice@comcast.net.

About BOB:  Every other year Dollars for Scholars co-ordinates BOB (Battle of the Buildings).   This is a fun-filled family friendly competition involving faculty and staff from the 6 YS buildings and a team of Juniors and a team of Seniors from the high school. Remembering Dr. Philip Avillo, Jr.

Our York Suburban family lost a pillar of our community recently.  Dr. Phillip Avillo, Jr. was an outstanding community leader who was elected to the York Suburban School Board of Directors for three terms, serving seven years as president. He also served as a member of the East York Elementary Parent Teachers Association and the York Suburban Dollars for Scholars program.

Dr. Avillo was very involved in his children’s lives, Andrew (class of 1991), Stephen (class of 1993) and Susan (class of 1997) and became a coach and mentor to countless other YS alumni over the years.

A proud veteran who served our country, Dr. Avillo was also a  strong advocate for education.  Please consider making a gift to the York Suburban Education Foundation in his memory.  While it was Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) that took him from this world too soon, we can honor Dr. Avillo by making a lasting impact on York Suburban students in his name.

York Suburban Swimming Makes the Grade

Three members of the York Suburban Swim Team have been recognized by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America (NISCA). Anne Baskwill, Aidan Fryar, and Zezette Pflaum qualified for Academic All-American status. Over 340,000 students are in involved in swimming at the high school level, and only 2% of the student-athletes are recognized with Academic All-American status. Congratulations Anne, Zezette, and Aidan! 

The boys swimming program not only excelled in the pool by finishing 3rd in District III, they also performed at a high level in the classroom accumulating a team GPA of 3.243. The NISCA has recognized the team as a bronze level Academic All-America Team. Congratulations, boys, for making us all #YSPROUD
