The Alpha and Omega of Kindergarten at Yorkshire Elementary

Submitted by Kathy Pavoncello

The month of May was big for Yorkshire kindergarten students, both current and future. On Thursday, May 11, the school hosted its annual “Countdown to Kindergarten,” a chance for future kindergarten students and their parents to familiarize themselves with the school and staff. Families received ideas for fun ways to practice readiness skills over the summer months, and learned where to gather essential materials to aid that practice. The 2017-2018 school year will mark a new beginning for both Yorkshire and Valley View Elementary Schools. This incoming class of kindergarteners will be the first to experience full-day education in the York Suburban School District.

Just as we celebrated new beginnings, we also celebrated the end of a special year of kindergarten on May 24 and 25. Our morning, afternoon, and full day kindergarten classes stepped onto the stage to accept diplomas of graduation to first grade. They acknowledged their educational progress, as well as a year of fun at Yorkshire. A special addition to the graduation ceremony included a parade of  Yorkshire alumni, now graduating seniors, processing through the building and gathering in the auditorium to applaud the kindergarten graduates. The new tradition was a wonderful way for Yorkshire students to visualize their future, and for the Class of 2017 to fondly remember its primary past.
