Building a Community at East York Elementary

Submitted by Mrs. Karen Potts

On February 15, East York Elementary students earned a school-wide reward. Each student worked with another student from a different grade level, providing an opportunity for community building among East York students.  While partnered, students participated in service activities to connect East Yorkers with individuals in our local community.  Students created  “compliment presents” that included positive sentiments, sayings, and words to brighten the day of residents or patients of local nursing homes and retirement communities.  Students also created “nursing home hugs” which are door hangers decorated with pictures and words of kindness.  Each door hanger is a drawing and a card, all in one!  Recipients will include residents of Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Manor Care Health on Kingston Road, the Brunswick at Longstown, and Eastminster Presbyterian Church – all located in our Haines Acres neighborhood!  The students enthusiastically participated in this activity,  excited to brighten someone’s day!  We were all reminded that sometimes the little things in life matter most to people.  Each day we need to look for those little things that make our hearts happy!
