Road Runners are Rising Stars in Robotics

On Saturday, February 3, the Indian Rock First LEGO League teams attended the First LEGO League regional tournament at Pennsylvania State University, Berks County. Each team programmed the LEGO EV3 Mindstorms robot to perform missions, presented a “Robot Design Executive Summary”, and  completed a “Core Values” activity to demonstrate teamwork skills. All teams also did a science project related to this year’s HydroDynamics theme. The “We Rock the Bots” team (coached by Mitzi Heaton & Jason Siewert) designed a Hydroponics bus that helps African communities conserve water. The “Robotic Roadrunners” (coached by Jen Foremsky & Sussy Tjandra) designed a solar-powered algae harvester to reduce harmful algae blooms in the Chesapeake Bay. The Robotic Roadrunners received the “Rising Star” award for team work ethic and entrepreneurial project design.

This is the first year that York Suburban School District has participated in the First LEGO League program. The program is designed for students in grades four through eight. Elementary and middle school-aged students research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO-based robots of their own design.
