Escape Room Mathematics

Submitted by Mrs. Stephanie Crumbling

Using fifth grade math concepts that included multiples, factors, prime numbers and problem solving, Mrs. Crumbling’s classes at Indian Rock Elementary solved clues in order to “escape” from 5 different “rooms.” Working in teams, the students unscrambled math vocabulary words, calculated double-digit multiplication problems and used a variety of higher level thinking skills and problem solving strategies. Tensions were high as the students frantically tried to solve all of the clues before the clock ran out. Two teams managed to “escape” with minutes to spare. One student exclaimed, “This is the most fun I ever had in math class!” In fact, they were having so much fun, they didn’t realize that they were learning!
